Abilene, Texas - (February 21, 2009) Stephen Colbert may have a falcon, a sea turtle, an elephant seal, a spider and an ice cream named after him but race car driver Leilani Münter has beat him to the punch in the world of alternative energy.
Among 432 wind turbines in the largest wind
farm in the world, NextEra Energy's wind turbine #133 outside of Abilene,
Texas bears the mark of Carbon Free Girl Leilani Münter. After
climbing 252 feet to the hub of the turbine, Leilani was incredibly
honored to sign one of the giant blades - which is the length of a
basketball court - and make it her own.
"It was magical to be up there among hundreds of turbines harnessing the
power of the wind. It is one of those breathtaking, magnificent views that
is difficult to describe in words. They are so powerful and until you see
them up close, you have no perspective on how gigantic they are. For me,
the turbines are a symbol of how far humanity has come and what amazing
things we can do with innovative technology. Alternate energy will
eventually end the strategic significance of dirty oil and coal. It was an
honor to be invited and I can't thank NextEra Energy enough for giving me
an experience I will never forget. What NextEra Energy is doing is a
really beautiful thing, not only for preservation of our planet but for
the national security of the United States of America."
